Cafeteria Food Waste and the Half-Eaten Tray
Every lunch period, the trash cans tell a story that most students ignore. Half sandwiches, unopened milk, apples with one bite, and full scoops of rice disappear into black bags before the next class even starts.
Food waste at school feels small because one tray does not look dramatic. But multiplied by hundreds of students and every school day, it becomes a serious habit. It also feels wrong when many families worry about food prices.
Students waste food for many reasons. Sometimes portions are too big. Sometimes the menu is unpopular. Sometimes we take food because it is included, not because we want it.
Schools could offer smaller portions, donation systems for unopened items, better composting, and student feedback on menus. Students can also start by taking what they will actually eat.
A cafeteria is not just a place to eat quickly. It is also a place where we practice respect for resources.
